Examination Dates

Oral Exam

31.08.2020 - 02.09.2020LF/135

As usual, you have to register at the Prüfungsamt for the exams. Normally, you have to do nothing else!

We will schedule your exam during the period specified above. The personal appointments for the oral exams will be announced at our Web site on the last Tuesday before the exam week

Only if (and only then!!!) you are not available on single days of the examination period, please send an email to Prof. Fuhr . Please observe the following guidelines:

  • Do not mail us earlier than 4 weeks before, and no later than 2 weeks before the exam period.
  • Most likely, exams will only take place from Tuesday-Wednesday, so requests for Monday cannot be considered.
  • You should be available full-day on at least one of these days - in case you are available for a half day only, we will try our best.
  • In case you registered for 2 exams, both will be held together.

Emails not following the rules from above will not be answered (like those saying 'Please give me an appointment for my exam in ...', or emails not originating from a mail account)

Internet search engines are the central starting point for satisfying today's information needs. These engines are representatives of the broader class of informaiton retrieval systems, which are applied in many other environments (like e.g. internet shops, digital libraries, help systems, enterprise search).

This course will introduce the basic models and concepts for content-oriented search in the Web and other text collections. In the exercises examples will deepen the understanding of the theoretical concepts, and small practical exercises will be carried out. In the lab part, students will work on the configuration, application and evaluation of search engines.

  • Basic concepts (information literacy, vagueness and uncertainty, data, information and knowledge)
  • Representation of text content (free text search, classifications, ontologies)
  • Models (boolean, fuzzy, vector space, probabilistic retrieval, Web retrieval)
  • Evaluation (effectiveness vs efficiency, relevance, metrics for boolean retrieval, evaluation of linear rankings)
  • Interactive Retrieval (information seeking behavior; information search; system functions, user interfaces)

Lecture material

Besided the lecture slides, there will be given a script. Furthermore the following books/scripts are advisable:

(The script (download from ILIAS) corresponds with the lecture material, except the last two chapters, which are only available as slides.)

'Link-Analysis' is described at chapter 21 of the book Introduction to Information Retrieval.
